The
2001 Boys and Girls Championship this year departed from the traditional
18-hole championship into an internationally recognised 72- hole
format, played over three days. Open to handicaps 14 and under,
this will be the format for the future.
The
Championship, which is a popular event on the junior calendar, had
not lost any of its vigor. Sponsored by Segwick Kenya for the 14th
year, the event attracted 202 players.
Bhavnish
Chandaria's performance was highly commendable, as he was crowned
the new boys champion with a total score of 279, 5-under gross at
the 71-par Muthaiga course.
He
was 13 shots ahead of runner-up Rizwan Charania who had 292.
There
was also recognition for the best Under 14 years and Under 16 years
champion, which was won by Alex Sellas of Malawi and Farsheed Alibhai
respectively.
The
best nett score overall in the 72 hole competition was Yasser Shueb
who shot rounds of 62, 68, 69 and 67 playing off handicap 14.
The
championship also introduced a 36 hole medal event for handicaps
13 and above. A nett competition, the boys winner was Shiv Sapra,
on 123, followed by Nick Markham on 129.
The
new girls champion is Christina Andersen, who played 71 and 73 nett.
Both Bhavnish and Christina will enjoy courtesy on all courses in
the country for one year.
And
for the first time, a large group of boys from Eldoret participated
incuding James Kisia, 16 years, who won the Stableford event with
36 points.
A
new golfer, Nelson Mundanyi, who played in the 9-hole event won
with 28 points, followed by Geoffrey Makokha with 26 points, both
aged 12 years.
A point
of note, next year’s championship will be open to handicapped players
only.
