A
busy year for juniors
It
has been a busy year so far and there is plenty to report since
the last issue of The Junior Golf newsletter.
Our
Juniors qualified and represented Kenya in Japan, for the 2001 World
Junior Golf Team Championship. Although the golf may not have been
to a winning standard, the experience was unforgettable. This invaluable
experience will be used as the first step towards becoming world
class golfers.
Two
squads sponsored by R & A and the Chandaria Group are already in
top gear and we look forward to their progress through the year.
I do however appeal for more sponsors and wellwishers to support
the junior squad’s initiative.
The
JGF card continues to be accepted by most golf clubs in Nairobi
and upcountry. We have urged all the golf clubs to put on their
Notice Board, conditions of acceptance of the card. The August holidays
were busy, and you will read about the events elsewhere in the newsletter.
Bhavnish
Chandaria, the National Boys Champion 2001 will represent Kenya
in the Orange Bowl in Florida in December this year.
Kenya Junior Open 2002
Once again the Chandaria family have come forward with a new sponsorship.
Next year, Kenya will hold the inaugural Kenya Junior Open Championship
in April, just before the Zone VI Tournament. More details to follow.
And
more international exposure for the Kenya Juniors could also mean
once again hosting, the Africa Challenge Qualifying Round for the
Junior World Team Championship in 2002. This is because Zambia,
who were to host it have indicated that they may be unable to do
so. We hope to make an announcement as soon as it is confirmed.
On
the development front, the establishment of a golf facility for
juniors is still high on our agenda. We had hoped to rehabilitate
the nine-hole golf course at Lenana School but due to financial
constraints this project is still not yet off the ground. In the
meantime we are looking at plans to start a Golf Range at the Peponi
School, details are being worked out.
Finally,
you have read on the front page, the appointment of Mr. Naushad
Merali as the first patron of JGF. His appointment will go a long
way towards fulfilling our goal of promotion and development of
golf for our young boys and girls.
Eddie
Njoroge, Chairman.

and will be chaired by Vishy Talwar of Kenya. The historic first
meeting of the council was attended by five countries whose
