In 1897, the "R&A" became the "Governing
Authority" on the Rules of Golf. Since then, with the exception
of the United States of America, whose allegiance lies with the
United States Golf Association,
and Canada, which is self-governing but affiliated to the R&A,
every country which has taken up the ancient game has affiliated
to the R&A and accepts its authority. There are now some 100
countries, associations and unions affiliated to the R&A.
The Rules of Golf. As approved
by the United States Golf Association
and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club
of St. Andrews, Scotland United States Golf Association. Effective
January 1, 1998.
Approximately 4 million copies
of the Rules are published and distributed to English-speaking golfers
around the world (excluding the USA & Canada). The Rules are
translated into more than 20 languages - some of which have been
reprinted here courtesy of the applicable national Golf Association/Union.
